Journeys Inward Hypnosis

FAQS

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a process that can guide you into a natural state of deep physical and mental relaxation. From this place of deep relaxation, you can access your subconscious mind. A state of hypnosis is different from your usual state of being in which your conscious mind controls what you do. The conscious mind is logical and works by reasoning. The subconscious mind, on the other hand, is a more direct link to memories, emotions and your imagination. When you access your subconscious mind through hypnosis, you can be more creative. The subconscious mind also has the power to direct lasting changes.

Hypnosis works the same way as creative visualization. When you are hypnotized, old negative conditioning and thought patterns can be cleared, and the mind can be reprogrammed in a more positive way. In recent years, hypnotherapy has become more common as a way to affect lasting change. Hypnosis works so well because it bypasses the logical mind that judges and criticizes so that the root of the problem can be exposed. In the depths of the subconscious mind, you are experiencing, not thinking. Here you can use positive suggestions to help you reach your goals, overcome bad habits and reframe old thought patterns. You simply visualize what you want and change your mind!

The state of hypnosis is nothing new for most people. We are all in a kind of hypnotic trance whenever we are so involved in something that we lose track of everything else that is going on around us. With hypnosis, repeatedly traveling into your subconscious with the same goal in mind creates a new way of being. The best way to think of it is “guided meditation.” Hypnotherapy takes you into a guided trance where you can make changes that you can carry with you into everyday life.

How do I download an MP3 from your website?

When your order gets processed you will see an order confirmation page with a green download link button.  When you click on this button you will be prompted to either Open the file or Save the file. Please keep in mind that on most of the MP3s there is a limit of 5 downloads per MP3 and there is also a limit of 7 days within which to download the MP3. To avoid losing the MP3 or having the download link expire we recommend saving the file right away in a place on your computer that you won't forget. If for whatever reason you do exceed the 5 download limit or pass the 7 day time frame just email tech@journeysinward.com and we will send the original file. You will usually receive the file within 48 hours from the time of your request.

I am having problems with my initial order. How can I still get the MP3(s) I just purchased?

In the rare event that you can't download you file for some reason please email us at tech@journeysinward.com. Please reference your order number. Also please give us a brief explanation of the problem you are having or the error message and we will be sure to email you the MP3s you ordered within 24 hours.

How do the MP3s work?

Journeys Inward has created down-loadable hypnotherapy sessions to help people with a board range of different issues. These MP3s are very similar to the experience you would have if you visited a hypnotherapist in person. It is basically a recorded hypnotherapy session custom tailor to specific issues that one might have. The Mp3s range in length from 25 to 45 minutes. The MP3s are easily downloaded onto your computer where you can then transfer them to your iPod or other MP3 player to listen to in any location where you are comfortable. It is a good idea to listen to an MP3 with headphones in a place where you will not be interrupted or disturbed. You may want to listen in a quiet room where there are no phones or other potential distractions. Of course, never listen to a hypnotherapy MP3 or CD while driving!

Once you start the MP3, you will be guided through a progressive relaxation with your eyes closed. The issue that is the topic of that particular MP3 will be addressed and you will simply listen. You will quickly find yourself drifting into a very relaxed state where you will remain until you are guided to awaken. If you listening to an insomnia script or an MP3 that addresses another issue requiring sleep, you may be guided into a pleasant sleep at the end of the audio with the suggestion to awaken refreshed and alert in the morning.

You should continue to listen to the MP3 for 21 days in order to affect change. You will soon begin to see a change in your habits. It may be subtle at first or it may be quite dramatic.

Will I have to give up control to be hypnotized?

Are you in control when you are so involved in the plot of movie that you don’t notice someone walking into the room? If you have ever been involved in an activity that totally engrosses you – solving a complicated math problem, participating in a yoga class, reading a mystery novel – you have been in a hypnotic trance, but you were still in control and could come out of that state whenever you wanted to or needed to. In those cases, the math book or the yoga instructor or the pages of the novel guided your mind, but the true power was in your mind itself. It’s the same with the power of hypnosis; hypnosis exists within your own mind.

People sometimes misunderstand hypnotherapy because they think of the kind of “hypnosis” that is performed on stage for entertainment purposes. Such performances have nothing to do with true hypnotherapy. There is a misconception that you give up control under hypnosis, but the truth is you are actually more in control and more focused! Hypnosis is a natural state of concentration. It does not involve allowing someone to take over your mind or make you do something against your will. If you are given any hypnotic suggestions that conflict with your values, your subconscious mind will simply not accept those suggestions. A hypnotherapist does not have the power to make you do anything that you do not want to do. Hypnotherapy will not change your thoughts in ways that go against your own morals or ethics. If a hypnotic suggestion conflicts with your moral code, your subconscious mind will protect you and you and you will simply come out of the trance.

When you enter a hypnotic state, you use the power of your own mind to make lasting changes in your thinking patterns that can enable you to stop bad habits or reach new goals. You feel calm, relaxed, rested and at peace as your old belief systems are replaced with healthier new ones.

What can I expect during a hypnotherapy session?

You can expect things to change quickly! In fact, a recent study published in an American health magazine reported the following results when hypnotherapy was compared to other types of therapy.

• 38% of people in psychoanalysis recovered after 600 sessions.

• 72% of people undergoing behavioral therapy recovered after 22 sessions.

• 93% of people who used hypnosis recovered after 6 sessions.

In my own practice, 85% of clients report a dramatic change within the first 3 sessions!

What is a session with Mariah like?

Mariah spends the first 30 minutes of her sessions answering questions and explaining what she does. After twenty years of practice as a hypnotherapist, she has helped many people dramatically change their lives for the better. Mariah calls her work accelerated therapy for change. Because her sessions range from 1 ½ - 2 hours (longer than the typical one hour sessions that most therapists offer), the client has ample time to do what she calls the “work.”

In Mariah’s experience, it can take about 30 minutes or more to get down to the real issue. The extra time is used to allow the client to go deeply into the subconscious where the work of change is done. As a result of her accelerated approach, hypnotherapy with Mariah tends to be more short term. Her approach is eclectic. She uses not only traditional talk therapy but also a journey into the subconscious mind through deep relaxation, breathing and visualization techniques. She skillfully guides her clients and then allows their subconscious to do the work. Her sessions have a spiritual base that allows clients to gently but profoundly heal their issues, whether they are relationship issues, behavioral problems, addictions, issues related to childhood trauma, or something else. No matter what the issue, the subconscious knows where to go and how to heal.

In the 20 years that Mariah has been practicing, she is continually amazed by how far people can go with gentle guidance. Forgotten memories bubble to the surface to be looked at or healed. Difficult addictions and patterns unwind easily. People can learn to turn down or eliminate their pain all together, sometimes even in one session, as one longtime migraine patient reported after working with Mariah.

Clients are often surprised that they hear almost every word during the hypnotherapy session. In fact, unless they enter a particularly deep state, clients may not feel any different than when relaxing in a favorite chair with a good book. One may feel quite mellow and almost weightless or very heavy as if sinking into the chair.

What are some reasons to go to a Hypnotherapist?

There is historical proof that hypnosis was used in ancient times as anesthesia for surgery, for dream interpretation and much more. Today, hypnotherapy is used for many reasons related to resolving troubling issues or personal growth. Here are just a few:

• Anxiety
• Stress
• Panic
• Fear, Phobias
• Smoking Cessation
• Addictions
• Grief
• Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
• Hypno-Birthing
• Age Regression
• Childhood Traumas
• Pain Control
• Weight Loss
• Insomnia
• Athletic Enhancement
• Self Esteem
• Children's Issues

Can I be Hypnotized?

If you can relax, you can be hypnotized. If you can imagine or visualize, you can be hypnotized. Anyone who is open to the process can be hypnotized. How deeply an individual can be hypnotized varies with the person’s willingness and ability to respond. If a person is not naturally responsive or is resistant, his or her receptivity to hypnosis can improve with practice.

The small minority of people who cannot be hypnotized are those who really don’t want to be hypnotized or those who have trouble letting go, usually because they are afraid of losing control. Once the process is explained and a person becomes familiar with hypnosis, even those who resist at first can be hypnotized. The bottom line is that if you want to be hypnotized, you can be. If you are resistant or have trouble relaxing, you can try practicing yoga, meditation or creative visualization to prepare for hypnotherapy sessions.

Mariah uses progressive relaxation and guided imagery methods as an introduction to have her clients imagine being in a safe or peaceful place. Then the “work” of awakening to full consciousness is completed.

How many sessions will it take before I see a change?

The number of hypnotherapy sessions will vary for each individual. Some clients will have a very powerful shift after only one session, while others may wish to come for a series of sessions to really ensure they are exploring and healing all aspects of the issue or issues in question. When it comes to changing habits or behaviors regulated by the subconscious, nothing works more quickly to facilitate subconscious change than working with a competent hypnotherapist.

Are the results permanent?

This depends on the client’s willingness and desire to truly change. Certain hypnotic modalities can have very permanent and positive results, while other techniques may require further reinforcement and post-hypnotic suggestions. Clients can be trained to use self-hypnosis at home to reinforce the effects of sessions.

How does it feel to be hypnotized?

Everyone feels something a little different in a hypnotic trance, but the feeling is the opposite of stress, so you will feel relaxed and calm. Hypnosis is a natural state that feels similar to creative visualization or a dreamlike state. When you awaken, you feel refreshed and revitalized. In the hypnotic state, you are simply resting comfortably in a relaxed state with your eyes closed. You are able to hear the therapist’s voice and the sounds outside, but both are in the background and are not your main focus.

What about those stage hypnotists that seem to control people and make them do embarrassing things?

Stage hypnosis is more like a magic show. The people who are “hypnotized” in these shows are probably acting out a tendency to be exhibitionists and doing what the performer tells them to do in order to get attention. People who volunteer in these situations are agreeing to play a part. If nothing happens, they are simply led off stage. Performers who “hypnotize” people on stage are experienced in selecting “volunteers” who are likely to willingly participate in the performance, even if they are not conscious of their willingness to do so.

What will I remember?

You will remember everything you need to remember – probably everything that happens during the session. You will likely move between light and deep states of consciousness, and you may be given a lot of information while in a hypnotic trance, so it may take a few days, weeks or longer to remember everything. It can help to write down as much as you remember after each hypnotherapy session. It is reasonable to expect that some of the subtle details you receive will be lost over time or that it will take a while for some things to “click.” This is not unlike any learning situation.

How deeply will I be hypnotized?

It depends on your needs and what works for you. You will probably find it easier to go deeper into a state of hypnosis after you have been hypnotized several times. In the beginning, you may find that you are not in a deep state of hypnosis, and this will usually be due to uncertainty or resistance. Once you are familiar with hypnosis and comfortable with the experience, you will find that it is easier to go deeply into a hypnotic state with each subsequent hypnotherapy session.

Can I get stuck in a hypnotic trance?

No. Hypnosis is a natural state and no one can be held in that state against his or her will. Even when the person goes very deeply into trance, the person simply falls into a natural sleep and awakens when rested. Even if that depth is not reached, a person always comes out of hypnosis as if waking up from sleep. If the hypnotherapy session were to stop before the hypnotist brought you out of the trance, you would realize on your own that the session has stopped, and you will simply wake up. Remember, you will always be aware of everything that is going on around you, even though you will be in a very relaxed state. At any time during the hypnotherapy session, you will have the power to come out of it by your own will.

Can I be hurt by hypnotherapy?

There is not a single documented case of a person being hurt by hypnotherapy. This powerful tool can only be used to affect positive change. Hypnosis is ultimately something that you direct and control, so you cannot be hurt by being hypnotized. You will always be able to use the power of your own mind to override anything that feels uncomfortable or goes against you moral, religious or ethical beliefs.

Can I benefit from hypnotherapy?

You can use hypnotherapy to help you with a host of issues, from fears and phobias to overcoming social anxiety to stopping smoking. Hypnosis can help you lose weight, manage test anxiety, and even improve your golf game! Any issue in your life that involves your mind can be tackled through hypnosis. If you have a particular issue that you want to address through hypnotherapy, ask yourself the following questions about that issue.

Does my mind affect my performance?

Are my thoughts involved in this process?

Do my feelings have an effect on the way I experience this issue?

Does anything in my past reinforce my thoughts, beliefs or emotions regarding this issue in a negative way?

Since it would be difficult to find an issue for which the answer to at least one of these questions would not be “yes,” it is safe to say that hypnosis can be used to your benefit in almost any situation.

Is there a difference between self-hypnosis and guided imagery, creative visualization or meditation?

All of these practices are very similar. Misconceptions about hypnosis have led many people to resist the process, but like guided imagery, creative visualization and meditation, the purpose of hypnosis is to relax the body and focus the mind. Hypnotherapy is just a more guided or “coached” approach to attaining this state.

How soon will I see results from hypnotherapy?

This depends on your level of motivation and commitment. If you are dedicated to making changes and you are making these changes for yourself, you will probably see results very quickly. If you are undergoing hypnosis for someone else who thinks you should do it, you may not see results at all. The key is your level of motivation. You must want to change in order for change to be possible.

The amount of time it will take to notice results also depends on how comfortable you are with the process and how well you relate to and respect the therapist. Of course, the more often you undergo hypnosis, the more quickly you can expect to benefit from it. As long as your expectations are realistic – for example, you don’t expect to be put to sleep and awaken magically free of the urge to ever smoke again – you will probably find that you see results sooner rather than later. If your level of motivation is extremely high, it is actually possible to see results after only one session.

Should I listen to the MP3s at night or during the day?

The process of hypnosis is equally effective during the day as it is at night. It does not matter what time of day you listen to the recordings.

What if I fall asleep during the session?

It does not matter if you fall asleep during the session. Hypnosis is still effective if you are asleep because you can still hear what is going on, even though you may not be conscious that you are hearing it. Your brain will still be alert to the suggestions being made on the recording. Your subconscious mind never goes to sleep, so you can still benefit from hypnosis even if you fall asleep.

How do I transfer my recordings from iTunes onto my IPod?

iTunes allows you to add digital audio and video files from your computer directly to your iTunes library. You can add audio files that are in AAC, MP3, WAV, AIFF, Apple Lossless, or Audible.com (.aa) format. If you have unprotected WMA content, iTunes can convert these files to one of these formats. To add your hypnosis MP3 downloads to iTunes, follow the steps below:

1. Open iTunes.

2. From the File menu, choose file.

3. Select add file to library.

4. Browse to where you saved the Hypnosis MP3 on your computer.

5. Click on the file, and iTunes will put it in the music Library. You will then be able to download it to your iPod.

You may also want to visit Apples website for more information. Please see the following link for more info.

Can I listen to more than one recording on the same day?

Yes.

How long should I listen to the recordings?

We recommend that you listen to each hypnotherapy recording once a day for a minimum of 21 consecutive days (or nights). After that, listen to the recording whenever you need or want reinforcement.

Will I be in an Alpha state during hypnosis?

Yes. Alpha is a light trance-like state that you experience naturally without even realizing it. It is similar to the state you are in when you are driving your car while deep in thought but at the same time still alert enough to know when to turn off onto your exit. In an Alpha state, responses to important stimuli are still possible but it is the perfect time to impose suggestions that can positively affect your subconscious mind and change your life. In an Alpha state, people are 200 times more influenced by suggestions. Self-hypnosis programs help you reach this ideal state for making changes.
